Description

Having rich conversations about identity is a skill which requires practise and confidence. The Wheel of Discussion or “WOD” is designed to support social care practitioners in trying out different questions with colleagues so that the discipline can be brought into your work. The WOD contains 16 questions which invite curiousity about a person’s experience and which will have a particular focus when viewed through the different lenses offered by different Social Graces.

John Burnham (1992) and Alison Roper-Hall (1998) developed the mnemonic ‘social GGRRAAACCEEESSS’ (SGs) to encourage practitioners to pay attention to aspects of difference and diversity within their work.

The questions that the WOD creates are to be used as starting points or aides for conversation. Turn the wheel to create a question and practise using it with a colleague. Try to maintain curiousity and ask additional questions which invite rich discussion and generate understanding. Consider how the question might be used within your work. How does your experience of asking or being asked particular questions influence how you might bring this practice into your own work.
